Volunteer with BACS
Make a direct, meaningful difference in the lives of shelter animals on your schedule.
About the Volunteer Program
Berkeley Animal Care Services has a vibrant, welcoming volunteer community.
Volunteers spend quality time with dogs, cats, and other animals in the shelter, helping reduce stress and improve their well being while they wait for adoption.
There are no set schedules or required shifts, and you don’t need to come at the same time each week.
We especially need volunteers who can consistently help on weekdays. If that sounds like you, we’d love to have you join us!
What to Expect
Training
New volunteers complete 6–8 hours of training spread over a few weeks. New classes start twice each month.
After Training
You may volunteer during any business hours, seven days a week.
Time Commitment
A minimum of 1 hour per week for 6 months after completing training.
Flexibility
There are no fixed shifts. Come when your schedule allows.
Youth Volunteers
Ages 14–15 may volunteer with a parent or guardian (who must also attend all trainings).
Ages 16–17 may volunteer independently with parent or guardian consent.
Types of Volunteer Roles
Dog Volunteer
Dog volunteers provide exercise, socialization, and enrichment through walks, playtime, leash practice, and puzzle games. These activities help promote positive behaviors and make dogs more adoptable.
Cat Volunteer
Cat volunteers offer comfort, affection, and play to cats and kittens. Even a small amount of attention can greatly reduce stress and help shy or fearful cats gain confidence.
Ambassador
Ambassadors are often the first friendly face visitors encounter. This role involves welcoming the public, assisting in the lobby, and directing visitors to the appropriate staff members.
